Before the Program
Before the program, Gertrude’s life was marked by deep hardship and emotional pain. After losing her husband, her sole provider, she was left to care for her grandchildren alone, despite facing a physical disability. She lived on a small plot of land and struggled daily to survive. Her situation worsened when thieves stole her only remaining security: her livestock. This loss pushed her further into depression and despair. Despite all this, Gertrude remained resilient, holding onto hope for a better future.

With no steady income or support system, Gertrude often went days with barely enough food to feed herself or the children in her care. Basic necessities like clean water, medical treatment, and clothing became luxuries far out of reach. Each day was a battle to meet the most essential needs, and the emotional burden of watching her grandchildren suffer only intensified her pain. Still, in the face of overwhelming odds, she refused to give up, continuing to nurture and protect her family with whatever little she had.
How the Program Helped
The program helped Gertrude by restoring her livelihood through animal rearing. After the emotional devastation of losing her cow, the team introduced pig rearing as a sustainable alternative. Pigs, known for their rapid growth and large litters, offered Gertrude a new source of income and hope. With the ability to sell surplus piglets and continue breeding, she was given a practical way to support herself and her grandchildren.
Beyond just the animals, the program provided emotional healing, guidance, and essential resources—empowering Gertrude to rebuild her life with dignity and resilience. This support helped her regain stability and focus on creating a secure, brighter future for her family.
What Teddy is Doing Now
Gertrude is now engaged in rearing pigs as a means of rebuilding her livelihood. With support from the program, she began raising pigs in her community, using them as a sustainable source of income. By selling surplus piglets and keeping some for future breeding, she is able to support herself and provide for her grandchildren. She is also focusing on creating a brighter and more stable future for her family, empowered by the resources and guidance she received. Though her health has declined and worsened, her grandchildren continue to help her rear her goats and pigs, ensuring the work continues and the family stays supported.
